About Us

We’re two brothers, Justin and Nick Mares, who are passionate about health. Our mom would say it’s due to the zucchini chocolate cakes (bleh) she used to make us when we were young.

It's this passion for health and better living that drove us to create Kettle & Fire: the highest-quality, most convenient bone broth in the world.

We started this company after Justin first heard about bone broth in late 2013, while looking for ways to improve Crossfit performance. Around the same time, Nick tore his ACL while playing soccer (ouch) and was looking for natural ways to speed the healing and recovery process.

Being the incredible brother he is, Justin went online to buy Nick some bone broth... and found nothing. No other companies were all organic, or used real bones that were from 100% grass-fed cattle. Others were frozen and shipped with huge ($150+) minimums, and harmful dry ice.

If our goal was to deliver the amazing health benefits of bone broth to the world, we had to find another way. This started us on a year-long journey to find the best recipe, the best bones, the best ingredients, and the best packaging.

We can now proudly say that we've succeeded. And our customers (and their 700+ 5-star reviews) seem to agree!

A few things really set us apart from other bone broth companies:

Organic, 100% Grass-fed Bones

We have a saying here at Kettle & Fire - killer bones = killer bone broth. This is why we only use bones from organic chickens (for our chicken bone broth) and 100% grass-fed, pasture-raised cattle that are hormone and antibiotic free (for our beef bone broth).

We exclusively use knuckle, patella, femur, neck and feet bones in our bone broth. These bones contain the highest concentration of white and red stem-cell marrow, as well as high levels of collagen.

Innovative Packaging

Our packaging is where we really differentiate ourselves from other bone broth companies. Most companies aren’t USDA approved (meaning their manufacturing processes are not inspected for health and safety) and require their bone broth to be frozen. This makes shipping expensive, and storage a pain. I know my freezer isn’t big enough to store a lot of bone broth, especially with the quarter-cow I currently have in there!

We knew that expensive shipping prices and frozen product would turn people away from bone broth.

So, we went a different route.

After many months of working with food scientists and world-renowned chefs (one who was on Iron Chef!), we created a bone broth that doesn’t spoil, even at room temperature, without adding any preservatives, additives or extra sodium.

We do this by utilizing $6mm worth of packaging equipment to package our bone broth "under a vacuum", meaning there's no air in the package that can react with the broth and make it go bad! This is how we get our long shelf life without any preservatives or yucky additives.

Our packaging is also recyclable and made of 98% wood fiber - a natural and renewable raw material. The FSC™ label on our packaging is a guarantee that it is sourced from responsible forest management and other controlled sources, and it is supported by global environmental organizations like WWF and Greenpeace.

The inside of the packaging is then lined with a thin layer of heat-resistant polymer to ensure that no leeching or reaction occurs between the packaging and the bone broth itself.

We'd love you to try our bone broth, and stand behind our product 100%. If you have questions, comments, or just want to know how many other siblings we have (5), email us anytime - justin@kettleandfire.com or nick@kettleandfire.com. We'd love to hear from you.

Love,
Justin and Nick Mares
